Patrons

in 1815 the Prince Regent realsied his dream and began to transform an old farmohouse into the breathtaking fantasy that is the Royal Pavilion. Brighton became the provincial capital, a hub of fashionable British society. A reuptation it continues to enjoy. The Prince Regent found Brighton liberating, away from the constraints of London and the royal court, he was able to enjoy life to the full. His ambition, creativity and kifestyle set the tone for the City's future. Today, the Royal Pavilion embodies many aspects of Brighton & Hove’s vibrant culture: fun, extravagant, eccentric, liberating and beautiful.
Great Patrons
'A most magnificent patron of the arts in this country, and in the world.'
The Duke of Wellington, following George’s death, c.1830

George IV was a great patron of the arts. He undertook several large architectural projects and constantly altered and refurnished his existing residences. He collected paintings by European masters, such as Rembrandt and van Dyck, as well as contemporary British painters such as Joshua Reynolds, George Stubbs and Thomas Lawrence.
